In this article, we will try to understand the Surah Shams English Translation. This Surah was revealed at a time when the disbelievers were strongly opposing the Holy Prophet (PBUH) in Makkah.
Surah Shams English Translation
- By the sun and its light.
- And by the moon when it is in its full phase.
- And by the day when it enlightens it.
- And by the night when it blankets everything around.
- And by the heaven and its Maker.
- And by the earth and its Maker.
- And by the soul and its Maker.
- Then He imparted to him the ability to discern between what is right and what is wrong.
- Nay, surely, he has succeeded who cleanses his soul.
- And sure enough, he has been annihilated who has defiled it.
- Thamud rejected (Saleh) because of their disobedience.
- When their most grievous calamity struck.
- So the Prophet of Allah said, “Be cautious regarding Allah’s she-camel and allow it its rightful share of water.
- So, they rejected him and amputated its hooves, then their Lord inflicted destruction upon them for their sins, then made them even.
- And he did not mind his fate.
Importance of Surah Shams:
This verse contains the word “duha”; the commentators have said: This refers to the light of the sun and its heat. Allah has placed such effects in the sun that indicate the subtle wisdom of Allah, the subtleties of His plan, blessings, and signs of His power. To learn the English translation of Surah Shams, one must read these lines. some other short surahs are also read by Muslims in prayers like, Surah Nas, Surah Falaq.
- Then, with the heat of the sun, vegetables and grains ripen in the fields, fruits are produced in the gardens, flowers bloom, and wholesome food is prepared for humans and animals.
- Then, Allah Almighty, in His wise plan, has placed the sun at a suitable distance from the earth. If this distance were less, all the fields and gardens would burn, and all humans and animals would be burned to ashes due to the intensity of its heat.
- Then, the great sign of Allah Almighty’s power in the sun is that the sun covers a distance of several thousand miles and makes a circle around the entire earth. Then, Allah Almighty expresses His existence and generosity through the sun, because its light and heat reach every living soul, whether he is a believer in Allah or a disbeliever, grateful to Him or ungrateful to Him, His friend or His enemy.
- The existence of the sun is evidence for the oneness of Allah Almighty because the sun has a specific body, and it rises and sets from a specific place and at a specific time, and its system has never changed. Therefore, it was necessary that there was a creator to keep the sun in this specific size and to bind it to this specific system, and that creator was necessary and ancient; otherwise, there would be a creator for it too, and this series would never end.
- It is also necessary that the creator be one; otherwise, there would be no uniformity in the system of its rising and setting and its specific movement, and the unity of its system is evidenced by the fact that its controller is also one.
Summary of Surah Shams:
In Surah Shams, Allah Almighty has sworn by seven things: (1) the sun (2) the moon (3) the day (4) the night (5) the sky (6) the earth (7) the soul of man, and by swearing by these seven things He said: Whoever purifies his soul from sins has succeeded, and whoever pollutes his soul with sins has failed.
Conclusion:
After taking oaths in Surah Shams, it warns man of the fact that the Creator who created man has given him countless abilities and endowed him with organs to use them. He has sown in his nature the seed of distinction between good and bad, good and evil.
