In this article we will read Surah Al Qamar English Translation. Surah Al Qamar was revealed in Mecca and consists of 55 verses. This Surah emphasizes the doom of the unbelieving nations and the certainty of the Day of Judgment.
“Al-Qamar” means moon, and the name of this Surah is derived from the incident when the moon split (into two pieces) during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) — a great miracle that Allah Almighty revealed to demonstrate His power.
This Surah is actually a comprehensive message of denial of the truth, divine punishment, and advice for the believers. It narrates the events of past nations as a lesson so that man may correct his ways and prepare for the Hereafter.
English Translation of Surah Al Qamar
- The Hour has drawn near and the moon has split.
- And if they see a sign, they turn away from it and say, “This is magic that has been going on forever.”
- And they deny it and follow their desires, and for everything there is an appointed time.
- And there has come to them news in which there is sufficient warning.
- And they have full knowledge, but the warners did not benefit them.
- So turn away from them on the Day when the caller will call for something they do not like.
- They will come out of their graves with their eyes lowered as if they were locusts scattered.
- They will be running towards the caller, saying, “This is a hard day.”
- Before them, the people of Noah also denied, so they denied Our servant and said, “He is mad,” and he was rebuked.
- Then Noah called to his Lord, “I am overcome, so help me.”
- Then We opened the gates of the heaven with water in torrents.
- And We caused springs to gush forth from the earth, and they rose as high as they had ceased to rise.
- And We carried Noah in the ship of planks and nails.
- Which sailed by Our grace, that was the recompense of him who was denied.
- And We left him as a sign, so is there any that will take heed?
- Then (they saw) how was Our punishment and warning.
- And We have certainly made the Quran easy to understand, then is there any that will understand?
- And the people of ‘Ad also denied. Then (they saw) how was Our punishment and warning.
- Indeed, We sent a storm one day, the calamity of which was everlasting.
- Which threw the people as if they were palm trees uprooted.
- Then (they saw) how was Our punishment and warning.
- And We have certainly made the Quran easy to understand, then is there anyone who will understand?
- And the people of Thamud also denied the warners.
- So they said, “Shall we follow the saying of a man from among us? Then we will surely go astray and be mad.”
- Has the revelation been sent down to him from among us? Rather, he is a liar.
- Soon they will know who is the liar.
- We will certainly send the she-camel to test them, so wait for them and be patient.
- And say to them, “The water has been divided among them, so let each drink from his turn.”
- Then he called his companion, but he stretched out his hand and cut off (his) glasses.
- Then how was Our punishment and warning?
- We sent upon them the punishment of a loud shout, then they became like the chaff of a thorn hedge.
- And We have indeed made the Quran easy to understand, then there is one who understands.
- And the people of Lot also denied the warners.
- And We rained down stones on them, except for the family of Lot, when We delivered them the night before.
- This is a favor from Us; thus do We reward the grateful.
- And he had warned them of Our punishment, but they doubted the warning.
- And they demanded of him his guests, so We blinded their eyes. So taste My punishment and My warning.
- And surely there came upon them in the morning a punishment that cannot be averted.
- So taste My punishment and My warning.
- And We have indeed made the Quran easy to understand, then there is one who understands.
- And indeed, there came to Pharaoh’s people warners.
- They denied all Our signs, so We seized them with a mighty seizure.
- Are your unbelievers better than these people, or is salvation written for you in the Scriptures?
- Do they say, “We are a mighty party?”
- Soon, this party too will be defeated and will turn their backs.
- Nay, the Hour is their promised time, and the Hour is more terrible and bitter.
- Indeed, the criminals are in error and madness.
- On the Day when they will be dragged on their faces into Hell (it will be said), “Taste the burning.”
- Indeed, We have created everything by calculation.
- And Our command is but a matter like the twinkling of an eye.
- And indeed, We have destroyed the likes of you, so is there any who will understand?
- And then, whatever they do is in the Book.
- And every deed, small or great, is recorded.
- Indeed, the righteous will be in gardens and rivers.
- In a place of honor in the presence of the Almighty King.
Main topics of Surah Al Qamar:
1. The miracle of the splitting of the moon (verses 1–2):
The surah begins with an extraordinary event:
“The Hour drew near and the moon was split.”
This event is one of the miracles of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), but the disbelievers of Mecca denied it even after seeing it and called it “magic.”
2. The end of the denial of the truth (verses 3–8):
The attitude of the disbelievers of Mecca is regretted, as they turn away despite clear evidence.
Their humiliation and disgrace on the Day of Judgment is mentioned when they emerge from their graves like scattered locusts.
3. The rebellion and destruction of previous nations (verses 9–42):
This section mentions the fate of five major nations:
The people of Noah:
Noah called his people to Allah, but they refused.
As a result, a terrible flood drowned them all.
Noah was called “Abd-Shakur” (the grateful servant).
The people of ‘Ad:
They were a people who were proud of their power.
A strong wind was sent upon them that destroyed everything.
The people of Thamud:
They were the target of divine punishment for killing the she-camel of Saleh unjustly.
A scream destroyed them.
The people of Lot:
They were a people steeped in immorality.
A shower of stones from the sky erased their name and trace.
The people of Pharaoh:
They rejected the message of Moses, and drowned in the sea because of their arrogance.
After each incident, a phrase is repeated:
So take heed—how stern was My reproof and My warning to them.
This verse leaves a deep impression and reminds us again and again that there is delay in Allah’s judgment, but not darkness.
4. The advice and ease of the Quran (verses 17, 22, 32, 40):
It is said four times:
Surely, We have made the Quran simple for those who seek to remember; is there anyone who will do so?
The repetition of this phrase emphasizes the ease and comprehensibility of the Quran’s guidance.
5. The scene of the Day of Judgment and the fate of the righteous (verses 43–55):
The faces of the disbelievers will be filled with regret and fear, and they will be dragged towards Hell.
While the pious and righteous servants will dwell in gardens and rivers with honor and dignity.
At the end of the surah, it is said:
In a true station, in the presence of a King, the Almighty.
Summary of Surah Al Qamar:
Surah Al Qamar is actually a profound commentary on the power of Allah, the reality of the Day of Judgment, and the fate of human negligence.
This surah reminds man that the time is near, the signs have appeared, but hearts are still in negligence.
The events of past nations are not stories, but living lessons of history that when a person descends into rebellion, Allah’s system wipes it out.
This Surah also reveals the miracle of the Quran and its ease – that guidance is not a closed door, but only those who accept the truth from the heart can enter it.
Surah Al Qamar, at the end of its narration, gives us a choice of two paths:
Either man abandons arrogance and comes into the light of faith, or wait for the end like the previous nations.
Conclusion:
Allah’s power is perfect and His decision is final. Denial of the truth always leads to destruction, while faith is the means of salvation.
The Quran has been made easy to remember and understand – but only those who listen with their hearts take heed.
The promise of Paradise for the pious, and the threat of disgrace for the criminals are stated.
Surah Al Qamar teaches us that opening the eyes of the heart is real faith, rather than seeing miracles.
