English Translation of Surah Al-Mujadila
- Indeed, Allah has heard the woman who used to argue with you about her husband and complain to Allah, and Allah was listening to your conversation. Indeed, Allah is Hearing and Seeing.
- Those of you who declare their wives to be their mothers are not their mothers, but their mothers are those who bore them, and they have uttered a falsehood and a lie. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Forgiving.
- And those who declare their wives to be their mothers and then wish to go back on what they said let them free a slave before they touch each other. That is so that you may be reminded. And Allah is acquainted with what you do.
- “Whoever cannot find the means, let him fast for two uninterrupted months before resuming marital relations. And whoever lacks the strength for that let him provide meals to sixty destitute persons. Such are the rulings of faith in Allah and His Messenger. These are the divine boundaries, and those who deny them shall face a grievous punishment.
- Indeed, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger will be humiliated as those before them were humiliated. And we have sent down clear signs. And for the disbelievers is a humiliating punishment.
- On the Day when Allah will raise them all from their graves, then He will inform them of what they used to do, which Allah has remembered and they have forgotten. And with Allah is all things.
- Have you not seen that Allah knows what is in the heavens and the earth? (To the extent that) what three men consult together is a fourth, and what five men consult together is a sixth, and whether there is a whisper of less than that or more, He is with them everywhere. Then He will inform them on the Day of Resurrection of what they used to do. Indeed, Allah is Knowing of all things.
- Have you not seen those who were forbidden to consult, then they return to that from which they were forbidden, and they whisper in sin and rebellion and disobedience to the Messenger, and when they come to you, they greet you with words with which Allah has not greeted you, and they say within themselves, “Why does Allah not punish us for what we say?” Sufficient for them is Hell; they will enter it. What an evil destination!
- you who believe! When you whisper among yourselves, do not whisper about sin and rebellion and disobedience to the Messenger, but whisper about righteousness and piety, and fear Allah to whom you will be gathered.
- (This) whispering is only a talk of Satan, to grieve the believers, but it cannot harm them except by Allah’s permission, and upon Allah do the believers put their trust.
- you who believe! When you are told to sit in gatherings, then sit, Allah will make room for you, and when it is said to you, “Get up,” then get up. Allah will raise those of you who believe and those who have been given knowledge in rank, and Allah is Aware of what you do.
- you who believe! When you whisper to the Messenger, then give charity before your whispering. That is better for you and purer. But if you cannot find it, then Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
- Were you afraid of giving charity before your whispers? Then when you did not do it and Allah forgave you, then establishes prayer and gives zakat and obey Allah and His Messenger. And Allah is Aware of what you do.
- Have you not seen those who have taken as friends a people upon whom Allah has incurred wrath, neither of you nor of them, and they swear falsely knowingly?
- Allah has prepared for them a severe punishment. Indeed, evil is what they do.
- They have taken their oaths as a shield, so they hinder (people) from the way of Allah, so for them is a humiliating punishment.
- No amount of wealth or offspring will shield them from Allah’s punishment. They are the dwellers of the Fire, destined to remain in it eternally.
- On the Day when Allah resurrects them from their graves, they will swear to Him just as they used to swear falsely before you, thinking they stand upon truth. Truly, they are utter liars.
- Satan has gained mastery over them and caused them to forget the remembrance of Allah. They belong to the faction of Satan—and indeed, the faction of Satan are the ultimate losers.
- Surely, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger will find themselves among the most disgraced.
- Allah has decreed: “I and My Messengers shall certainly prevail.” Indeed, Allah is All-Powerful, All-Mighty.
- You will never find those who truly believe in Allah and the Last Day forming alliances with those who oppose Allah and His Messenger—even if they be their fathers, their sons, their brothers, or their relatives.
- Such are the ones whose hearts Allah has filled with faith and strengthened with a spirit from Himself. He will admit them into Gardens beneath which rivers flow, where they will dwell forever.
- Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. These are the followers of Allah—and indeed, the followers of Allah are the truly successful.Would you like me to make this translation follow a uniform scholarly tone (like The Clear Quran or Saheeh International) or a literary tone (more poetic and elegant, suitable for publication or recitation material)?
Main topics of Surah Al-Mujadila:
The incident of divorce and its ruling (verses 1–4):
Aws bin As-Samit, the husband of Khawla bint Tha’labah, said angrily: “You are like the back of my mother.”
In the Pre-Islamic Era, these words were considered synonymous with divorce.
Allaah made it clear that such things are false and sinful, and that divorce does not make a woman a mother.
The expiation for this sin was given as:
Freeing a slave,
If that is not possible, then fasting for two consecutive months,
And if that is not possible, then feeding sixty poor people.
Allah’s knowledge and supervision over everything (verses 7–10):
It was said, “Do you not know that Allah hears everything in the heavens and the earth?”
No secret word, whisper or advice is hidden from Allah.
The believers were commanded not to whisper for evil, sin or disobedience, but for goodness and reconciliation.
Manners of polite gatherings (verses 11–13):
Muslims were taught manners of gatherings:
When it is said in a gathering, “Give place,” then make room for others.
Before engaging in private conversation with the Messenger (ﷺ) in a gathering, it was ordered to give charity so that people would not talk unnecessarily.
Condemnation of the hypocrites and their character (verses 14–19):
The hypocrites are mentioned as those who befriend the enemies of the Muslims.
They oppose Allah and His Messenger and think that their plan will succeed, but Allah will humiliate them.
He said: “Satan has taken them under his control and has made them forget the remembrance of Allah.”
Comparison of the Believers and the Hypocrites (verses 20–22):
The Believers are praised for not befriending the enemies of Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ), even if they are their close relatives.
These are the ones in whose hearts faith has been written and for whom there is good news of Paradise.
Summary of Surah Al-Mujadila:
Surah Al-Mujadila contains social justice, solutions to family problems, and the exposure of the hypocrisy of the hypocrites.
It states that Allah Almighty hears every voice, even the cry of an oppressed woman is not hidden from His knowledge.
This Surah is a clear proof that Islam is the protector of women’s rights and the guardian of the family system.
Along with this, the believers are taught justice, modesty, politeness, and sincerity.
Conclusion:
Allah Almighty hears and knows everything, so a person should be careful in his speech and actions. Justice and adherence to the Sharia are essential in family matters. The difference between the attitudes of the hypocrites and the believers are made clear: the believers submit to the command of Allah and the Messenger.
Obedience, justice, piety, sacrifice, and loyalty are prominent among the characteristics of the believers. The Surah ends with the announcement of the success of the believers and the pleasure of Allah.
