In this article, we will read the English Translation of Surah Al-Ma’arij. It is a Meccan Surah, revealed in the early years of Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) mission in Mecca. This was a period of intense opposition, persecution, and denial from the Quraysh pagans.
The people of Mecca considered the occurrence of the Hour to be impossible and improbable, and when they were repeatedly threatened with the Hour, they would say in mockery, “You have been saying for a long time that the Hour will come, the Hour will come, why don’t you bring it?”
Translation of Surah Al-Ma’arij English
- A questioned one inquired concerning a chastisement that is inevitable.
- A chastisement that the deniers are not able to shun.
- A command from Allah, the Possessor of means of ascendancy.
- The angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in a Day whose length is fifty thousand years.
- So be patient with graceful patience.
- Truly, in their eyes, it is an eventuality pushed to the farthest horizon.
- But We see it as very nearby.
- On the day when the sky will be as molten copper.
- The mountains will be like wool, light and without form.
- Even the closest of friends will not speak to each other.
- They will have a clear view of one another. The guilty one will wish to ransom himself from the punishment on that Day by sacrificing his children.
- And his wife, and his brother.
- And his family who sheltered him.
- And everyone on earth – if only that could save him.
- But no! It will be a blazing Fire.
- Pulling away the skin of the scalp.
- It will call those who turned their backs and walked away.
- And who gathered wealth and kept it.
- Indeed, the human being is created anxious.
- When evil touches him, he becomes distressed.
- But when good comes to him, he becomes stingy.
- Except for those who pray.
- Those who are constant in their prayers.
- And those in whose wealth is a share.
- For the questioned one and the deprived.
- And those who are convinced of the reality of the Day of Judgment.
- 27And those who dread the penalty of their Lord.
- Be certain that no one is immune from their Lord’s chastisement.
- And those who guard their private parts.
- Except with their wives, or those their right hands hold – then they are not culpable.
- But whoever seeks more than that, they are the wrongdoers.
- And those who fulfill their trusts and are faithful to their covenant.
- And those who testify with truth when they testify.
- And those who carefully maintain their prayers.
- They will be in gardens, honored.
- So what is the matter with those who disbelieve – rushing towards you.
- From the right and the left, in countless numbers.
- Do they all presume they will be admitted to a Garden of Delight?
- Never! We created them from what they know.
- So I swear by the Sustainer of every East and every West that We are most certainly able.
- To supplant them with others who are better, and nothing can thwart Us.
- Therefore, ignore them; let them sink into their futile talk and games until they face the Day they have been promised.
- A Day when they will emerge from their tombs in haste, like men scrambling towards an idol.
- Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. That is the Day which they were promised.
Key points of Surah Al-Ma’arij
Mention of the torment:
The surah begins with the question of when the torment that the disbelievers were mocking would come. This refers to the torment that Allah Almighty has promised the disbelievers, and this surah confirms its occurrence.
Characteristics of the believers:
The surah describes the eight characteristics that distinguish the believers from the disbelievers, such as patience and spending money.
Comforting the Holy Prophet (PBUH):
The Holy Prophet (PBUH) is advised to be patient in the face of the suffering inflicted by the disbelievers, and he is comforted by describing the end of the disbelievers.
Summary of Surah Al-Ma’arij:
This Surah threatens the Meccan infidels who made fun of the Hereafter and the punishment, and announces to them the imminent punishment. This Surah narrates the terror of the Day of Judgment, the believers’ traits, and the disbelievers’ termination.
Conclusion:
After studying Surah Al-Ma’arij, we can conclude that when the disbelievers of Mecca were informed about the Day of Judgment, they said, “You keep threatening us about the Day of Judgment.
When will the Day of Judgment come? What will happen on that day. Everyone will be trembling with fear and horror. Friends, brothers, wives, children, parents, all will be forgotten.
Everyone will have felt sorry for their own souls, so do not be ignorant. The Hour will not come at your request, but at the time that Allah Almighty has set for it. When that time comes, the Hour will occur automatically.
