Rakats of Asr Prayer: A Brief but Comprehensive Introduction

There are a total of eight Rakats of Asr Prayer, which are performed in the following order:

Four Rakats of Sunnah Ghair Muqaddah:

These are performed before the obligatory prayer of Asr Prayer. This is a non-emphatic Sunnah, meaning that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed them occasionally, but did not perform them consistently. Despite this, their performance is a source of reward.

Four obligatory Rakats:

This is the obligatory and most important part of the afternoon prayer. It is obligatory for every Muslim to perform them. Performing them in congregation is an emphatic Sunnah.

The special thing about the afternoon prayer is that there is no sunnah or nafl after the obligatory prayer. This teaches us that sometimes even a short part of worship, if performed with sincerity, can be very valuable.
