In this article we will read Can Vomiting Break Your Fast? In Islam. The ruling on vomiting during fasting depends on two things: If the vomiting occurs involuntarily, that is, spontaneously, then the fast is not broken, even if it is a mouthful. However, if the vomiting is intentional and the mouthful is full, then the fast is broken.
Let us know the opinions of the four schools of thought (Hanafi jurisprudence, Shafi’i jurisprudence, Maliki jurisprudence, and Hanbali jurisprudence) on this subject so that we can understand whether vomiting breaks the fast?
Categories: Ramadan, Prayer, The Holy Quran
1. Hanafi jurisprudence:
Ruling based on the amount of vomit:
To understand Can Vomiting Break Your Fast? In Islam, we must read this paragraph. Spontaneous vomiting: If the vomiting occurs spontaneously and its amount is less than a handful (i.e. a mouthful), the fast is not broken.
Spontaneous vomiting and its amount is a handful or more: If the vomiting occurs spontaneously and its amount is a handful or more, the fast is broken and it is obligatory to make up the missed meals.
Intentional vomiting: If the fasting person vomits intentionally (whether the amount is small or large), the fast is broken and qadha is obligatory.
2. Shafi’i school of thought:
Spontaneous vomiting: If vomiting occurs spontaneously (whether the amount is small or large), the fast is not broken.
Intentional vomiting: If the fasting person vomits intentionally, the fast is broken and qadha is obligatory.
3. Hanbali school of thought:
Spontaneous vomiting: If vomiting occurs spontaneously, the fast is not broken, whether the amount is small or large.
Intentional vomiting: If the fasting person vomits intentionally, the fast is broken and qadha is obligatory.
4. Maliki school of thought:
Spontaneous vomiting: If vomiting occurs spontaneously, the fast is not broken, whether the amount is small or large.
Intentional vomiting: If the fasting person vomits intentionally, the fast is broken and qadha is obligatory.
Definition of voluntary and involuntary vomiting:
1. Involuntary vomiting (without intention):
o It is vomiting that occurs without the fasting person’s own will and choice.
o Example: Vomiting spontaneously due to nausea, vomiting due to illness or weakness.
o In jurisprudential books, it is interpreted as “overcoming vomiting” or “out of choice”.
2. Voluntary vomiting (with intention):
o It is vomiting in which the fasting person performs an action of his own will and choice that results in vomiting.
o Example: Vomiting by inserting a finger or something into the throat, vomiting by force, or vomiting with the help of some medicine.
o In jurisprudential terminology, it is called “Istiqaa” or “Akhraj al-Qiyaa’ (vomiting) by choice”.
Conclusion:
1. All four schools of thought agree that vomiting intentionally and voluntarily breaks the fast and its qadha is obligatory.
2. Regarding involuntary vomiting:
o The Hanafi school of thought takes into account the quantity (a mouthful)
o The other three schools of thought do not break the fast due to involuntary vomiting without limiting the quantity
o If vomiting occurs spontaneously, there is no blame on the fasting person
o Do not rush to break the fast in case of vomiting
o If vomiting has occurred and there is doubt as to whether the fast has been broken or not, then as a precaution, make up the fast for that day
3. Remember:
In the case of a fast broken due to vomiting; only qadha is obligatory, and expiation is not obligatory.
