Translation of Surah Abasa English

  • The Prophet (PBUH) turned away and said,
  • A blind man approached him.
  • And what do you comprehend that perhaps his soul may be purified?
  • Or if he takes advice, then the advice will profit him.
  • But for the one who does not listen,
  • So we pay attention to him.
  • It is not your responsibility if he chooses not to be reformed.
  • But for the one who approaches you running,
  • And he is fearful.
  • So you turn your back on him.
  • This is not mere retribution; indeed, it is a reminder.
  • So let us remember it whosoever wants.
  • It is in the noble scriptures.
  • Which are noble and clean.
  • In the hands of writers.
  • The nobles, the righteous ones.
  • How ungrateful is God’s punishment on man!
  • From what did He create him?
  • From a drop He created him, then balanced and proportioned him.
  • Then he eased for him the way.
  • Then He made him die, then He put him in the grave.
  • Then He will resurrect him whenever He wants.
  • It is not fair (what he has done), he didn’t listen to what He ordered him.
  • So let man remember his sustenance.
  • That we pour down water from the sky.
  • Then we divided the earth and planted it with grain.
  • And grapes and herbs.
  • And olives and palm trees.
  • And thick gardens.
  • And fruits and grass.
  • Provisions for you and your cattle.
  • Then when there will be a deafening noise.
  • On the Day when a man will turn away from his brother.
  • And from his mother and father.
  • And from his wife and his sons.
  • Every person will be in a state that will make them indifferent to others.
  • And certain faces will sparkle with brilliance on that Day.
  • Laughing happily.
  • And some faces on that Day will be like dust on them.
  • Black will enfold them.
  • They are the disbelievers and disobedient.

Introduction of Surah Abasa

Hazrat Abdullah bin Umm Maktoum (may Allah be pleased with him) was among those fortunate ones who are counted among the “first ones”. He was blind. One day, Shaybah, Utbah, the sons of Rabi’ah, Abu Jahl, Umayyah ibn Khalaf, Walid ibn Mughirah, Abbas ibn Abdul Muttalib, and other leaders of the Quraysh were present before the Messenger of Allah (BPUH)

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was trying to bring them out of the darkness of disbelief and polytheism with great compassion and understanding. “Harees Alaikum” was on his chest. Meanwhile, Abdullah ibn Umm Maktoum arrived. Due to his blindness, he could not see the color of the gathering. He was compelled by his excessive desire, and as soon as he arrived, he said, “O Messenger of Allah, teach me from what Allah has taught you.”

The Holy Prophet did not like this unnecessary intervention. Signs of displeasure were visible on Rukh Anwar. The etiquette of the gathering also required that when the series of words that had been started earlier was finished, a new topic should be started. Here, the Holy Prophet was busy performing the most important duty of preaching.

Abdullah had already become a Muslim. He had countless opportunities to gain further education, but Allah Almighty, while comforting Hazrat Abdullah, revealed this blessed Surah so that the world would know that the value and status of broken hearts and burnt livers in this court is not that of anyone else.
