The literal and figurative meaning of “Burooj” is
“Burooj” is the plural of “Burooj”. It is a high building and a palace. It is used to point towards the position of a dome and a star. According to the scholars of the Hiyat, there are nine heavens.
All seven heavens have a planet. The seven planets are Moon, Saturn, Mercury, Sun, Jupiter, Mars, and Venus, and stars that are fixed (i.e., do not rotate) are present in the eighth heaven. The ninth heaven is known as the Atlas, which is plain, and the various shapes that are produced by the collection of stars in the eighth heaven are seen in the ninth heaven, which is observed in observatories.
It sometimes resembles a lion, and that is the Leo constellation; it sometimes resembles a scale, and that is the Libra constellation; and sometimes it resembles a scorpion, and that is the Scorpio constellation.
There are twelve constellations in total: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. The Sun moves the distance of one constellation in a month and the distance of twelve constellations in a year. The four seasons of summer, winter, spring, and autumn are formed because of this movement of the sun. Like other Surahs of the Holy Quran, Allah Almighty has clarified the signs of His Self in Surah Adiyat.
Imam Fakhruddin Muhammad bin Omar Razi Shafi’i (d. 606 AH) writes:
Scholars have mentioned three views concerning the interpretation of the constellations:
(1) These are the famous twelve constellations, they are sworn to because they have a very strange wisdom, because the ascension moves and travels in these constellations, and the benefits of this soul are dependent on the movement of the sun, and this is evidence that the creator of these constellations is a great, wise man.
(2) The constellations are the phases of the moon, and they are named after because the moon travels through these constellations, and strange effects come into existence due to the movement of the moon.
(3) The constellations refer to the big stars, and they are called constellations because of their appearance, because the literal meaning of constellation is: appearance. (Tafsir Kabir, Vol. 11, p. 106)
