Surah Qadar English Translation
1- No Doubt, we laid bare the Quran upon the Night of Bliss.
2-And what will make you know what the Night of Decree is?
3- The Night of Destiny holds more value than a thousand months.
4- When the Night of Power emerges, angels and the Spirit alight upon earth, carrying their Lord’s sovereign commands.
5-It is a night of peace until the break of dawn.
Did our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) know about the determination of Laylatul Qadr or not?
Abu Salamah narrated that I asked Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) about Laylat al-Qadr, who was my friend. He said: We performed I’tikaf with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in the middle ten days of Ramadan.
He came out on the morning of the twentieth of Ramadan and delivered a sermon to us. He said: I was shown Laylat al-Qadr, but I forgot it.
So, whoever performed I’tikaf with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) should return. We returned and we did not see any clouds in the sky. Then suddenly a cloud came and it rained and the roof of the mosque started dripping and there were date palm branches on its roof.
The Iqamah for prayer was called. Then I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prostrating in water and mud, until I saw a mark of mud on his forehead. (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith No. 2016)
Hazrat Ubadah bin As-Samit (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) came out to inform us of Laylatul-Qadr, and at that time two Muslims fought with each other. He said: I came to inform you of Laylatul-Qadr, so if so and so fight, the determination of Laylatul-Qadr will be taken away, and it may be better for you, so search for it on the twenty-ninth night, the twenty-seventh night, and the twenty-fifth night. (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith No. 2023)
The commentators have said that the knowledge of the determination of Laylatul-Qadr was taken away from the Prophet (PBUH) only in this year, and he was given its knowledge again in the second year. (Fath al-Bari, vol. 4, p. 778)
Allah Almighty has kept many other things secret, for example, He has kept the Wali of Allah hidden so that people may respect and honor every person, believing that this person could be a friend of Allah.
He has kept the hour of Friday at which supplications are accepted hidden so that Muslims should continue to pray at every hour of Friday, thinking that this may be the hour of acceptance.
He has kept the time of death hidden so that a person should always be engaged in good deeds and avoid evil deeds, so that when he dies, he will come doing good deeds and not, God forbid, he will die doing evil deeds.
He has also kept the time of the Hour secret so that people may fear at every moment that the Hour may not come at that time. He has also kept the Night of Power hidden so that if a habitual criminal spends this night in sins, it will not be written in his book of deeds that he has deliberately disrespected this great night.
The virtues of Laylat al-Qadr
It was narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Allah has granted Laylat al-Qadr to my nation and He did not grant it to any Nation before it. (Dur al-Manthur, vol. 8, p. 522)
Summary of Surah Qadar
This is a very glorious night. During this night, Allah the Highest watches over His creation. He frees His creation from sins.
