In this article we will study about Can You Hug Your Boyfriend during Ramadan? In Islam, all relationships between men and women outside of marriage are prohibited. The concept of “boyfriend” or “girlfriend” does not exist in Islamic law, because in Islam, relationships between men and women are permissible in only two ways: through marriage or through a relationship of intimacy.
Throughout the month, Muslims try to deepen their faith and refrain from acts that will violate their fast or contradict Islamic teachings. One question often asked is whether physical intimacy, like hugging a boyfriend, is allowed during Ramadan.
Islamic Perspective on Physical Intimacy during Ramadan
In Islam, physical intimacy between unmarried couples is generally discouraged. The Quran and Hadith (sayings of the Prophet Muhammad) emphasize modesty and avoiding situations that may lead to temptation (fitnah). To understand, Can You Hug your Boyfriend during Ramadan? Must read following paragraphs.
For Married Couples:
- Married couples are allowed to engage in physical intimacy, including hugging and kissing, only outside fasting hours (i.e., after Iftar until Suhoor).
- During fasting hours, all forms of sexual activity are prohibited, as they invalidate the fast.
For Unmarried Couples:
- Islam prohibits any form of physical intimacy, including hugging, kissing, or touching, between unmarried couples.
- Ramadan is a time for self-restraint, and avoiding such actions helps maintain purity and focus on worship.
Islamic scholars agree that unnecessary physical contact with a non-mahram (someone you can marry) should be avoided, especially during Ramadan.

Alternatives to Physical Affection
Instead of physical contact, couples can:
- Spend time in Islamic discussions or Quran study.
- Pray together (separately, as Islam does not allow mixed congregational prayers for non-mahrams).
- Support each other in good deeds, such as charity or helping the needy.
The Sayings of the Four Imams
Imam Abu Hanifa Numan bin Sabit ( Rahmtullah )
In Hanafi jurisprudence, touching, shaking hands or hugging between a man and a woman who are not mahrams is makruh tahrimi, whether it is during Ramadan or not. Although this act does not invalidate the fast, it is a sin.
Imam Malik ( Rahmtullah )
In Maliki jurisprudence, physical contact with a non-mahram is also haraam. According to Imam Malik, although this does not invalidate the fast, it is a sin and contradicts the sanctity of Ramadan.
Imam Shafi’i ( Rahmtullah )
In the Shafi’i school of thought, it is also forbidden to touch or hug a non-mahram. According to Imam Shafi’i, if semen is released from it with lust, the fast is invalidated.
Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal ( Rahmtullah )
In the Hanbali school of thought, it is also forbidden to touch or hug a non-mahram. If semen is released from it, the fast is invalidated, and both qadha and kaffarah are required.
Conclusion:
While hugging may seem harmless, Islam encourages Muslims to avoid physical intimacy outside marriage, especially during Ramadan. The month is meant for spiritual growth, and maintaining proper boundaries helps in achieving that goal.
Hugging or kissing a girlfriend/boyfriend is not permissible in Islam, whether during Ramadan or otherwise, as it can lead to further sin.
Ramadan is about controlling desires. Unmarried couples should maintain boundaries to preserve their fast and spirituality. In this article we have learnt Can You Hug Your Boyfriend during Ramadan?
