  41. Or do they have knowledge of the unseen, which they keep writing down?
  42. Do they intend to make a wager, while the disbelievers are the ones who are making a wager?
  43. Do they have any god besides Allah? Allah is glorified — He is above every partner they attribute to Him.
  44. If they see a piece of the sky falling, say, “A cloud, piled up.”
  45. So leave them alone until they see their Day when they will fall down unconscious.
  46. On the Day when their wager will not avail them at all, nor will they be helped.
  47. And indeed, the wrongdoers will have a punishment besides this, but most of them do not know.
  48. And be patient until the command of your Lord comes, for indeed you are before Our eyes, and glorify the praises of your Lord when you rise.
  49. And glorify Him (even at night) and after the stars have set.

Introduction to the Topics of Surah Tur

This surah contains some prominent themes, which are described below:

Statement of oaths and signs of Allah:

At the beginning of the surah, Allah swore by various things (e.g.: mountains, books, inhabited houses, high roofs, the raging sea) in order to draw attention to the fact that the Day of Judgment is a reality.

Judgment and the appointment of reward and punishment:

This surah states that the Day of Judgment is certainly coming, and on that day the doers of good will be rewarded and the disbelievers will be punished.

The Believers’ Paradise and the Promise of Goodness to Their Families:

The believers are mentioned in Paradise, where they will find happiness with their families based on their good deeds, provided that they are also righteous.

Rejection of the Objections of the Disbelievers and Opponents of the Prophet:

The Surah answers the objections that the Prophet ﷺ was a poet or a madman, and challenges them to come up with a statement like the Quran if they have any doubts.

The Responsibility of Man and the Call to Guidance:

Man is not left alone, his deeds will be accounted for, and he is invited to accept guidance and act. In this regard, questions are raised such as: Have you created your own authority before God? Do you know the Unseen?

Summary:

Surah Tur initially takes oaths on various creatures to highlight the power and wisdom of Allah Almighty so that man may pay attention to the fact that his Lord has created everything according to the presuppositions.

Then it is made clear that the Day of Judgment will definitely come, and that the reckoning on that Day will not be postponed. There the believers will find happiness and comfort, and the disbelievers will suffer severe punishment.

This is followed by a description of the blessings of Paradise for the believers — fruits, meat, servants, children, and pleasant gatherings.

Then the state of the opponents is highlighted, who called the Prophet (PBUH) a poet, a madman, or a magician and they are challenged with questions such as: Did you create the universe yourself? Do you have the treasures of guidance?

Finally, the believers are instructed to wait patiently and steadfastly for Allah’s command, and to praise Allah day and night.

Conclusion:

Surah Tur teaches us that this world is temporary and the life to come is real. Its signs are all around us — mountains, seas, books, houses… all of these are evidence of Allah’s greatness.

This Surah also reminds us that our good and bad deeds will be accounted for, and we should take our responsibilities and follow the path of guidance.

Surah Tur presents the objections of the opponents with a lesson and gives the believers hope that Allah Almighty is well aware of their situation and will grant them an honorable place in Paradise. Therefore, we should live our lives in such a way that we are protected from the losses of this hereafter and give priority to the pleasure of Allah.
