English Translation of Surah Al-Waqi’ah:
- When the coming will come to pass.
- In whose coming there is no lie.
- The one who lowers and the one who raises.
- When the earth is shaken with a great force.
- And the mountains will be broken into pieces and become dust.
- So they will become dust and fly away.
- And (at that time) you will become three parties.
- Then how good are those on the right?
- And how bad are those on the left?
- And the first to believe will be the first to enter.
- They will be the ones who will be especially close to Allah.
- There will be gardens of bliss.
- Many of the first.
- And a few of the last.
- And a few of the last.
- They will be sitting facing each other, reclining.
- With them will be boys who will remain boys forever. What will they do in coming and going?
- With drinking cups and sun-glasses and a cup filled with flowing wine.
- It will not cause them any headache, nor will it cause them any weakness of mind.
- And fruits that they will love.
- And the flesh of birds that they will love.
- And maidens with large eyes.
- Like pearls set in layers.
- In return for what they used to do.
- They will not hear therein any idle talk or sinful talk.
- But they will say, “Peace be upon you.”
- And how excellent will be the ones on the right.
- They will be among thornless trees.
- And in knotted thorn trees.
- And in long shades.
- And in waterfalls of water.
- And in abundant fruit.
- Which will never be cut off, nor there any restriction.
- And on lofty platforms.
- Indeed, we have created them in a wonderful way.
- So we have made them virgins.
- We have made them attractive companions.
- For those on the right.
- Many will be from the front.
- And many from the back.
- And how evil are those on the left.
- They will be in the fire and boiling water.
- And in the shade of black smoke.
- Which will not be cool or comfortable.
- Indeed, they were happy before that.
- And they persisted in the great sin.
- They exclaimed, “Is it possible that once we are dead and reduced to dust and bones, we shall be revived?”
- And our forefathers before us.
- Say, “Indeed, both the former and the latter.”
- They will be gathered at an appointed time.
- Then indeed, you, O misguided and deniers,
- Surely, you will have to eat the tree of the fig tree.
- Then you will have to fill your bellies with it.
- Then you will have to drink boiling water over it.
- Then you will have to drink like the thirsty camels.
- This will be their hospitality on the Day of Resurrection.
- We created you, so why do you not believe?
- Look at the (sperm) that you emit.
- Do you create it or we will create it.
- We have decreed death among you, and We are not powerless.
- That we may replace you with people like you and create you in a state that you do not know.
- And you have already known the first creation, so why do you not reflect?
- Look at what you sow.
- Do you make it grow, or we will make it grow?
- If we will, we can tear it to pieces, and then you will wonder.
- Indeed, we have been wronged.
- Nay, we have been defeated.
- Look at the water that you drink.
- Have you brought it down from the clouds, or will we bring it down?
- If we pleased, we could change it into water unfit for thirst. So why are you not grateful?
- Look at the fire that you kindle.
- Have you created its tree, or will We create it?
- We have made it a memorial and a benefit for the travelers.
- So, proclaim your Lord’s greatness and exalt His sacred name.
- Therefore, I swear by the places of the stars as they fade away.
- And indeed, this is a great oath, if you understand.
- That this is indeed a glorious Quran.
- Written in a hidden Book.
- Which none touches except the pure?
- A revelation from the Lord of the Worlds.
- So do you take this speech as a trivial matter?
- And you take your share only in denying it.
- Then why do you not withhold the soul when it reaches the throat?
- And you see at that time.
- And we are nearer to it than you, but you do not see.
- So if you are not to be accounted for.
- Why do you not return the soul if you are truthful?
- Then (when the Hour comes) if he is of those who are near.
- Then (for him) are comfort and fragrance and gardens of pleasure.
- And if he is of those who are on the right.
- Then peace is upon you, O man of those on the right.
- And if he is of those who deny, the misguided.
- Then boiling water is a welcome.
- And the entrance to Hell.
- Indeed, this is a certain fact.
- So glorify the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
Key themes of Surah Al-Waqi’ah:
1. The terrifying scene of the Day of Judgment (verses 1–12):
The Surah begins with the occurrence of the Day of Judgment.
The earth will shake, the mountains will crumble, and the people will be divided into three groups:
Al-Saqaqoon (those who take the lead)
Ashab Al-Yamini (those on the right)
Ashab Al-Shamal (those on the left)
This division will be based on the deeds and faith of the people.
2. The success and rewards of the believers (verses 13–26):
The “Al-Saqaqoon” – the doers of good and seekers of nearness to God – are described as having high rewards.
They will be in gardens filled with delight, seated on golden thrones, enjoying young servants and the best fruits.
For them will be pure spouses, an atmosphere of security, and eternal comfort.
3. The prosperity of the Ashab Al-Yamini (those on the right) (verses 27–40):
These are the people who did good deeds with faith.
They are promised shady trees, flowing springs, sweet fruits, and a life of contentment.
Their faces will be radiant—a sign of Allah’s pleasure.
4. The fate of the Companions of the North (the left) (verses 41–56):
They are mentioned in a very harsh manner.
They will be tormented by burning fire, boiling water, and thorny trees.
Their crime was that they were arrogant, denied the Hereafter, and were proud of their wealth.
5. The signs of Allah’s power (verses 57–74):
Man is invited to reflect on his creation, the germination of seeds, the arrangement of water, and the creation of fire.
All these signs remind man that everything in the universe is a manifestation of the power of a Wise Creator.
6. The Greatness of the Quran (verses 75–82):
Allah Almighty mentioned the greatness and purity of the Quran:
“Certainly, it is a majestic Quran, enclosed within a sanctified scripture, which only the pure can touch.”
That is, this Quran is honorable, safe and pure, which only the purified can touch.
7. The reality and end after death (verses 83–96):
The scene of the helplessness of man at the time of death and the departure of the soul is described.
At that time, man understands that nothing is in his control.
There is relief for the believer, and grief and punishment for the disbeliever.
Finally, it was emphasized that this Quran is the certain truth, and whoever wishes can learn from it.
