English Translation of Surah Al-Mumtahanah
1. O you who believe! Do not take My enemies and your enemies as friends, sending to them messages of friendship, while they have already rejected what has come to you of the truth, and they drive out the Messenger and you on the ground that you believe in Allah your Lord. If you go forth for Jihad in My way and seeking My pleasure, do not take them as friends, sending to them messages of secret friendship, while I know well what you conceal and what you reveal. And whoever among you does that, then he has strayed from the right path.
2. If they overcome you, they become your enemies and stretch out their hands and their tongues against you with evil, and they wish that you should disbelieve.
3. Neither your relatives nor your children will benefit you on the Day of Resurrection. He will judge between you, and Allah is Seer of what you do.
4. Surely there is an excellent example for you in Abraham and those with him, when he said to his people, “Indeed, we are disowned by you and those You take others besides Allah for worship, and everlasting enmity and hatred have come to exist between us and you, until you acknowledge faith in Allah alone.Except when Abraham said to his father, “I will ask forgiveness for you, and I will not be able to do anything for you against Allah. Our Lord, we have put our trust in You, and to You we have turned, and to You is our return.”
5. Our Lord! Do not make us a trial for those who disbelieve. Our Lord, forgive us. Indeed, You are the Almighty, the Wise.
6. Surely there is an excellent example for you in them for anyone who hopes in Allah and the Last Day. And whoever turns away, then indeed, Allah is Oft-Forgiving.
7. Perhaps Allah will make between you and those with whom you have enmity a friend. And Allah is All-Powerful, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
8. Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you on account of religion, nor have they driven you out of your homes, that you should deal kindly with them and be just to them. Indeed, Allah loves those who are just.
9. Allah forbids you from those who fight you on account of religion, and have driven you out of your homes, and have helped (them) in your expulsion, that you should befriend them. And whoever befriends them, then they are the wrongdoers.
10. O you who believe! When believing women come to you, test them. Allah knows best their faith. If you find them believers, do not send them back to the disbelievers. They are not lawful for them, nor are they lawful for them. Give the disbelievers what they have spent. There is no sin on you if you marry them when you have given them their dowries. Do not seize the shame of the disbelievers. Ask for what you have spent on them, and ask for what they have spent. This is the command of Allah, which He has decreed for you. And Allah is Knowing, Wise.
11. And if any of your women has gone to the disbelievers, then your turn comes, give to those whose wives have gone, what they gave, and fear Allah in Whom you have believed.
12. O Prophet, when believing women come to you pledging allegiance that they will not associate anything with Allah, nor steal, nor commit adultery, nor kill their children, nor bear children of falsehood, which they may carry between their hands and feet, nor disobey you in any good matter, then accept their pledge and ask forgiveness of Allah for them. Indeed, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
13. O you who believe! Do not befriend a people upon whom Allah has incurred wrath. They have despaired of the Hereafter as the disbelievers despair of the people of the graves.
Key points of Surah Al-Mumtahanah
The limits of friendship between faith and disbelief (verses 1-3)
Allah Almighty warns the believers not to befriend the enemies of Allah and their enemies secretly.
The example of Prophet Abraham (verses 4-6)
Allah Almighty gives the example of Prophet Abraham and his companions who declared their innocence of the disbelievers and trusted in Allah alone.
Principles of good conduct towards infidels (verses 8-9)
These verses provide a moderate guidance:
Allah does not forbid you from good conduct towards those non-Muslims who do not fight with Muslims in matters of religion, but friendship is forbidden to those who are hostile and drive Muslims out of their homes.
The Test of Women after the Treaty of Hudaybiyah (verses 10-11)
When women come to Medina as believers, their faith should be tested to see whether they are sincere or come for worldly gain.
Principles of Pledge of Allegiance from Believing Women (verse 12)
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was commanded that when women pledged allegiance to Islam, he should take a pledge from them that they would:
Not associate partners with Allah
Not steal
Not commit adultery
Not kill their children
Not tell lies
Not disobey the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) in righteousness
The commandment on mutual relations between Muslims (verse 13)
Believers were forbidden to befriend those upon whom Allah’s wrath had descended.
Summary:
Surah Al-Mumtahanah teaches Muslims that the line between faith and disbelief is clear. Justice must be maintained even in enmity. The honor, faith and character of women must be protected.
Loyalty should be only to Allah, the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and the believers.
Conclusion:
Surah Al-Mumtahanah concludes with powerful lessons on faith, loyalty, justice, and compassion. It reminds believers that their ultimate allegiance must always be to Allah and His Messenger (PBUH), not to blood relations or worldly ties that oppose faith. The Surah teaches a balanced approach—kindness and fairness toward non-Muslims who are peaceful, yet firmness and disassociation from those who fight against Islam.
