Translation of Surah Qalam English
- Noon. By the pen and by what they inscribe.
- You [O Muhammad] are not, by the grace of your Lord, a madman.
- And indeed, for you is a reward never-ending.
- And you are truly of a magnificent character.
- So, you will see, and they will see,
- Which of you is afflicted with madness?
- Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way, and He is most knowing of the rightly guided.
- So do not yield to those who deny the truth.
- They wish that you would compromise, so they would compromise [their hostility].
- And do not yield to any contemptible oath-taker,
- A slanderer, going about with malicious gossip,
- A hinderer of good, a transgressor, sinful,
- Cruel, and of dubious birth—
- Just because he has wealth and sons.
- When our verses are recited to him, he says, “Ancient fables!”
- We will brand him upon the snout!
- Indeed, we have tested them as we tested the owners of the garden when they swore, they would harvest its fruit in the morning,
- Making no allowance [for the will of Allah].
- So, a visitation from your Lord encircled it while they slept,
- And by morning, it was barren and bleak.
- At daybreak, they called out to one another,
- “Go early to your crop if you wish to harvest the fruit.”
- So, they went off, whispering to one another,
- “Let no needy person enter upon you in it today.”
- And they went out early, determined in their stingy intent.
- But when they saw it [ruined], they said, “We must have lost our way.
- No! Rather, we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!”
- The most reasonable among them said, “Did I not say to you, ‘Why do you not glorify [Allah]?'”
- They said, “Glory to our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers.”
- Then they turned to face one another in mutual blame.
- They said, “Woe to us! We were indeed arrogant.
- Perhaps our Lord will give us something better in its place. Indeed, we turn to our Lord [in hope].”
- Such is the punishment [in this life]. But the punishment of the Hereafter is far greater, if only they knew.
- Indeed, for the righteous are Gardens of Bliss with their Lord.
- Should We then treat those who submit like criminals?
- What is [the matter] with you? How do you judge?
- Or do you have a scripture in which you learn
- That indeed for you, is whatever you choose?
- Or do you have oaths [binding] upon Us, extending until the Day of Resurrection, that indeed for you is whatever you judge?
- Ask them which of them can guarantee that!
- Or do they have [other] partners [they ascribe to Allah]? Then let them bring their partners, if they are truthful.
- On the Day when the horror is unveiled and they are called to prostration, but they will not be able,
- Their eyes will be downcast, overwhelmed by humiliation. And they were indeed called to prostrate while they were sound [and able, but refused].
- So, leave Me, [O Muhammad], with whoever denies this discourse. We will progressively lead them to ruin from which they are unaware.
- And I will give them respite. Indeed, my plan is firm.
- Or do you ask them for a reward, so they are burdened by debt?
- Or is the unseen within their grasp, so they write [it down]?
- So be patient with the decree of your Lord, and be not like the Companion of the Fish [Jonah] when he called out in despair.
- Had a favor from his Lord not reached him, he would have been cast blameworthy upon a barren shore.
- But his Lord chose him and made him among the righteous.
- And those who disbelieve would almost stab you with their glances when they hear the message, saying, “He is certainly mad.”
- But it is nothing less than a reminder to all worlds.
